LOGLINE: When a young man finally gathers the courage to explore his true self and step into the world of the LGBTQ+ community, he comes face to face with his past, embodied by the person he once bullied for being gay. As he grapples with the inner demons of his own identity and confronts the shame of his past actions, he must choose between continuing to live in fear and hatred or embracing acceptance and love.

CONCEPTS & THEMES: ‘And Then There Was Him’ is a colourful LGBTQ+ short narrative film. It explores the positive side of coming out, self-acceptance and finding romance.

FULL SYNOPSIS: Michael is torn between his desire to explore his sexuality and his fear of his homophobic father’s disapproval. As he steps into the vibrant and wild world of a local gay bar for the first time, he is confronted with a crowd dressed in extravagant costumes, unlike his conservative attire. But when he meets the charming Logan, dressed in all-white with feathered wings, his fear begins to dissipate.

However, their budding romance is abruptly interrupted by Simon, Michael’s former schoolmate who he used to bully for being gay. Michael’s past mistakes catch up with him, and he’s left feeling ashamed and embarrassed. But just as he’s about to retreat into the shadows, Logan finds him and ignites a spark of passion that he never knew existed.

As they share a passionate first kiss, Michael is suddenly forced to confront an unexpected truth when he stumbles upon his father in the most unlikely of places. Will he finally come to terms with who he truly is and accept the people around him, or will he let fear and shame control his life?

DIRECTOR’S NOTES: When I wrote our previous LGBTQ+ short, ‘Your Heart is Homeless’, I wanted to tell the story of the many people who lead a double life, struggling to come to terms with their sexuality. I also wanted to explore “gay panic” which is rarely in the news but is often talked about as “scary” encounters between other gay men.
‘Your Heart is Homeless’ has appeared on Amazon Prime, QueerBee, and Dekkoo, and currently has over half a million (over 650k) views on YouTube.
With ‘And Then There Was Him’, I wanted to explore a more positive side of coming out from a more naïve perspective, similar to mine. Everything is new and not always what you expect or hope for. Sometimes we are lucky and find someone to guide us through that first adventure.
